Apsley Cherry-Garrard, zoologist, explorer and author, was born in 1886 and was a member of Scott’s ill-fated expedition to Antarctica in 1911. He accompanied Scott on part of his journey but not the final ill-fated attempt to the South Pole. Cherry-Garrard later wrote a memoir of this, titled ‘The Worst Journey in the World’. He died in 1959. His grave and memorial is in the NW corner of St Helen’s churchyard.
