Celebrating 300 years of the James Marshall Foundation
Part of the recently launched Vision for our church includes a Priority of “Helping people encounter God’s Love”. One way we are seeking to do this is to deepen our own spirituality. Our Daily Bread is a way of regularly sharing bite-sized pieces of information about different ways of praying and engaging with God through other spiritual practices. at our last Parish Communion Service on Sunday, Linda, our Children and Families Minister, talked about Pray as You Go. To watch, please click on the video below:
Pray As You Go is produced by the Jesuits in the UK and is available as a website, or as an App for Smartphones and Tablets, (click on the links below). Each day there is a meditation on scripture with reflective questions to deepen your walk with God. And there is a treasure trove of other resources including special series of prayers and meditations for Lent and Advent as well as Examen prayers to look back on the day.
Come and join us for Mossy Church on July 3rd, 3.30pm at St Peter’s Church. We meet outside around the fire to think about the theme of trees. All welcome for a short informal service, worshipping through connecting with nature and practical activities.
Do you know a young person who loves singing?
If so, tell them about our Choral Scholarship scheme. We have a mixed voice choir which sings every week at the Parish Eucharist and once a month at Choral Evensong. We currently have Choral Scholar vacancies for school pupils in years 10 to 13, to start in September. Details can be found on our website. To download an application form, click here. Simon Pusey, our Director of Music would be delighted to answer any questions by email or phone – simon.pusey@ntlworld.com or 07973 453222. He would also like to hear from anyone of any age interested in joining our choir, whether as a Choral Scholar or other member.
Celebrating 300 years of the James Marshall Foundation
A beautiful concert was held at St Helen’s Church this week to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the life of James Marshall and particularly his setting up of The James Marshall Foundation 300 years ago. Today, JMF is still a local charity that offers financial support direct to under 25s in families of low income for educational or career opportunities. It now has annual grant funding of over £250k. The concert was led by young people with performances from St Helen’s and Beech Hyde School as well as from the four secondary schools in Harpenden. It was also attended by local dignitaries – including the Lord Lieutenant and High Sheriff, as well as supporters and beneficiaries of the charity.
If you are aware of a suitable need for financial support, please contact JMF at www.jamesmarshallfoundation.co.uk or on 01582 760735.
