Church Trail – the Lectern

Lectern

The lectern is traditionally where the Bible is read from. The Christian Bible has two sections; the Old Testament, which is the same as the Jewish Hebrew Bible; and the New Testament, which tells the stories of Jesus’s life, death and resurrection (coming back to life), and the activities of the first followers of Jesus. A section from the Bible is read aloud at every single service held at St.Helen’s. In our main morning service, this is usually from one of the four Gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke or John – which describe the life and teachings of Jesus, because these events are central to the Christian faith. The word ‘gospel’ means ‘good news’ in Old English.

Do you know any of the stories about Jesus as they are told in the Gospels?

If you would like to know more, you are welcome to borrow one of the small Bibles at the end of the pews.

This small lectern is lightweight enough to be moved out of the way if needed. There is another, much heavier lectern in church in the shape of a huge bird.

Can you see it? Can you guess what kind of bird it is? Clue: it flies very high, and has very good eyesight.

The Lectern frequently takes the form of an eagle, the bird which is said to be able to fly up and even look into the sun, bearing on its swift wings the message for all creation. The Eagle Lectern kept in the east end of the church is an example of this and is used on formal occasions, such as the carol service.

Another, more simple lectern in the Nave is used for most of our services. It was donated in memory of David Warner, for many years head teacher at St Helen’s CofE Primary School in this village; note that this one is adjustable in height and encourages us to allow younger members of the congregation to take part in our services.

The Scriptures, written long ago, were all written for our instruction, in order that through the encouragement they give us, we may maintain our hope with perseverance.
