Job Specification for Family and Children’s Minister
(20 Hours per week)
Salary: Pro-rata £21-23k pa


Purpose and Objectives

  • Working alongside the Children’s & Youth Minister and Ministry Team, to follow-up, build and maintain long term relationships with parents and children which will encourage participation in the life of the church and grow their faith in Jesus
  • To help develop the Church’s existing work with families and children
  • To assist in forming new ways of working with families and children

Main responsibilities

  • To work with the Children’s & Youth Minister to develop new models of children’s work for the new Sunday-afternoon contemporary service
  • Identify needs for possible new teaching materials and oversee the curriculum delivered for Junior Church
  • Identify staffing needs and proactively discern and recruit those members of the church with the gifts and abilities to be new leaders &helpers for different aspects Children’s ministry
  • Assist the Ministry team with All Age Worship services
  • With the support of the Ministry Team, resource and equip families to develop their faith at home
  • Assist in the running of our mid-week Toddlers’ group, with a view to building a bridge for families to the new afternoon congregation
  • Build on existing relationships with Primary Schools in the parish through lead assemblies, alongside other members of the Ministry Team and having an increased presence in both schools
  • Be aware of Safeguarding children issues and work alongside the Church’s Child Protection officer & Children’s & Youth Minister to ensure best practise
  • Encourage and resource Children’s Ministry leaders
  • Assisting the Ministry Team with identifying and delivering pastoral care for families in our parish

Person Specification


  • Either –
    • a Children’s Ministry qualification with post-qualification experience,
    • another suitable qualification for working with children with experience of working with children in a church context
    • or, if not formally qualified, experience within a church context
  • Excellent communication skills and a commitment to the discipleship and teaching of children, with a passion to use those skills to inspire children to have a personal faith in Jesus
  • The abilities to develop and deliver sessions (encompassing teaching and worship) that engage children in different church contexts (including Junior Church sessions, up-front leadership of corporate worship and schools work)
  • Christian commitment and an ability to work out the implications of their faith in a professional youth work context
  • Ability to establish and develop good relationships with children, parents, church members, the Church Leadership Team and the community in general
  • Ability to liaise and work (or manage the team of volunteers?) with voluntary staff.
  • Organisational skills, willingness to work flexible hours, ability to balance priorities and make sound decisions.
  • Have a humble, genuine and ‘willing to learn and grow’ attitude
